She grew up in London, raised by both parents along with her brother, Frank.

In later years, Joseph graduated with a degree in English from the University of London in 1927.

Afterwards, Joseph went to live inDurban, where she met and married dentist Billie Joseph.

Joseph passed away on 25 December 1992 in Johannesburg.

While at school, she is said to have displayed little fear in challenging authorities.

In September 1953, she was served with banning orders.
