In an email addressed to staff and students Chair of Council Dr Leticia Moja confirmed the news.

Mogoeng was elected by the University Council before being appointed as UKZN’s Chancellor almost four years ago.

The Chief Justice was the third person to fill the position as UKZN’s Chancellor.

The University stated that it will immediately begin the process of appointing someone to replace the Chief Justice.

In the meantime, Vice-Chancellor Prof Nana Poku will perform the duties as Chancellor.

It made special mention of Mogoeng serving as a ‘sounding board’ for the vice-chancellor.

This will be done in June of this year at the council meeting.

There has been no reasoning given for the Chief Justice’s decision to withdraw from the position.
